Holiday 2021: Fall and Winter Gardening Activities in Los Angeles-Los Angeles Times

2021-11-22 05:02:32 By : Ms. Leah Li

Thanksgiving is approaching (how did this happen?!), the holiday is approaching, and many Southern California botanical gardens are holding holiday light shows. My neighbors have installed lights in their yards.

There is still time to make your holiday wreath. (The Tree of Life Nursery has a good video explaining how, if you can’t take the course below.) November is also a good time to start composting, even if it’s just raking a bunch of leaves into the corner of your property in winter broken.

Many municipalities offer free or low-cost composting courses and dumpsters. Some people have suspended classes due to the pandemic, but for example, Los Angeles County Public Works still offers online courses and a $40 trash can. The smaller worm compost bin, which fits the size of the balcony, costs $65. Check the content available in your local jurisdiction.

No leaves? Offer to rake neighbors’ yards or collect them from the street before the sweepers come. The leaves decompose in winter, nourish beneficial microorganisms, create good soil and help plants thrive. Worms also like falling leaves, and their feces-droppings-are a nutrient-rich improver for any garden (and much cheaper than buying bags in the nursery).

This garden is a hidden treasure in Southern California. Hard to find, but we have a direction

Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve is a (semi-)secret garden near Ojai, everyone should "go!" list.
