A Colorado-based chain is branching out into the Richmond area with a plant-growing supplies store in Chesterfield County.

GrowGeneration plans to open a new store in late September at the Meadowbrook Plaza shopping center, according to company spokesman Alex Salaman.

The store will occupy about 9,000 square feet at 5720 Hopkins Road, a space between a Pizza Hut and an ABC store.

GrowGeneration sells supplies needed for hydroponic and indoor plant growing to both at-home growers and commercial operators.

The company offers soil, lighting, nutrients, grow tents, hydroponic growing equipment and other items. The company also provides cultivation facility design services to commercial clients.

The upcoming store is slated to be GrowGeneration’s first retail spot in Virginia, per the company’s website. Salaman said that should the store be successful, the company will look to open more locations in the Old Dominion.

“We are constantly evaluating our strategy and if this store does what we believe it will do, we will look to expand within Virginia,” he said in an email.

GrowGeneration’s expansion into Virginia comes about a year after adult personal cultivation and possession of cannabis was legalized in Virginia. Adults are allowed to grow up to four plants per household for their own personal use.

Similar growing supply stores already in the region include Happy Trees Agricultural Supplies and HomeGrown RVA.

GrowGeneration is a publicly traded company with more than 60 stores, most of them in California. The company’s retail footprint largely corresponds with states where it’s legal to grow marijuana for personal use.

The upcoming Chesterfield outpost comes as part of a larger expansion by GrowGeneration. The company opened its first Mississippi store in June, according to a news release. The company announced in June it will have a retail presence in 16 states with the opening of the Chesterfield store and the opening of a new store in Missouri this year.

The Chesterfield store is expected to have four to six employees.

Meadowbrook Plaza is anchored by a Walmart Neighborhood Market that opened in March 2015. The shopping center also features a Gold’s Gym outpost.
