BUCYRUS—The closing of the Bucyrus General Electric Plant became official when they dimmed their lights permanently on September 30th.

The plant, which has been in operation for more than 80 years, leaves a glaring hole in the lives of its employees and the city of Bucyrus.

In August, Mayor Reser thanked GE For being a solid community employer and addressed the loss of employment:

“There are job openings in the community, so we hope everyone finds a job,” he said. “It’s a sad day. We feel for the people who work there.”

Reser also noted the impact on city revenues for the remainder of this year into next year:

“It will be a financial hit for the City of Bucyrus’ general fund for the rest of the year and next year, so we’re working to plug those holes as best we can,” Reser said.

At Tuesday’s Council meeting, Reser said about 40 employees would remain at the plant through the end of the year to finalize the plant closing.

Ben Sabol, director of communications for GE Lighting, a Savant Company, released the following statement:

“For decades, Bucyrus Lamp Plant employees manufactured reliable lamp products that brought good things to life in millions of homes across America,” We’re incredibly grateful to them all for bringing their hard work, talent, skills, expertise, and commitment to excellence to the plant each day. Their electric enthusiasm and effort powered a manufacturing operation that outlasted every other lamp plant in the country of its kind.”

While it is not clear what the displaced workers will do next, Crawford County Job and Family Services is offering assistance. Share this:Facebook LinkedIn Twitter
